By now, most of us know that the transition into menopause is a lot more than hot flashes and mood swings. But did you know that changing hormone levels can affect your ears? Today, we’re talking about three surprising symptoms that may actually be connected to peri-menopause and menopause.
Symptoms You Didn’t Know Were Linked to Menopause:
👂 1. Hearing Changes
Does everything sound a little more muffled lately? Are conversations harder to follow—especially in noisy environments? A drop in estrogen can decrease blood flow and affect receptor cells inside the ears. These cells help transmit sound clearly, so when they aren’t functioning as well, things may seem quieter or harder to understand.
🎧 2. Tinnitus
Tinnitus is that buzzing, ringing, or humming in the ears that often feels worse at night or during times of stress. As estrogen declines, it can influence the neural pathways involved in hearing, causing the auditory nerve to “misfire” and create noises that aren’t actually there.
🌀 3. Balance + Dizziness
Many women describe feeling “off,” unsteady, or more sensitive to movement during the peri-menopausal years. Estrogen helps regulate fluid in the inner ear and semicircular canals—the system responsible for balance. When hormone levels shift, that fluid can become imbalanced between the left and right ear, which may trigger dizziness or motion sensitivity.
You may also notice these symptoms fluctuate throughout your menstrual cycle in peri-menopause as hormones naturally rise and fall.
How to feel better:
The good news—there are plenty of options for relief:
✔ Schedule a hearing test to check ear + nerve function.
✔ Try sound therapy.
✔ Reduce caffeine and prioritize good sleep (for tinnitus).
✔ Stay hydrated.
✔ Change positions slowly.
✔ Work with a physical therapist for dizziness and balance.
✔ Discuss HRT with your provider.
If ear-related symptoms are showing up during peri-menopause, you’re not imagining it—and you’re not alone. If you’re unsure where to start, We would love to help guide you.
