We hear clients complaining all the time about the weight gain that comes with peri-menopause and menopause which just won’t budge no matter what they do.
It's called visceral fat and it's terrible
Visceral fat is the fat that surrounds your internal organs, not the fat that lies just under
the surface of the skin. It is important to cushion your organs, but too much can be harmful. Visceral fat can be impacted by hormonal changes and metabolic processing.
How do you get rid of it?
Well if you forget already, head up to the top of the blog. If you want to burn visceral fat, you need to walk directly after your strength training session.
As you lift, your body releases fat burning hormones like growth hormone, catecholamines and glucagon. These hormones act like keys unlocking your fat stores, making them available for fuel. They pull fat out of storage and send them into your bloodstream, ready to be burned.
Now if you go for a walk after lifting, your body will tap into that unlocked fat and use it as its main energy source.
But fat loss is not the only benefit of walking after strength training. Walking after a lift flushes out lactate, which is the stuff that makes your muscles sore after a workout. It reduces stress hormones like cortisol. And you activate your recovery mode so your body repairs faster.
So if you have 10-20 minutes after strength training, don't just hit the showers. Walk it off! It's the simplest fat burning and recovery boosting combo you probably aren't doing yet!
What else can I do to get rid of that pesky visceral fat?
No one likes this answer because it involves making lifestyle changes. But here we go.
#1 Decrease cortisol levels.
#2 Decrease stress.
#3 Improve sleep.
#4 Improve insulin resistance.
