It turns out the strength of your handshake may be one of the best predictors of how long — and how well — you'll live.


Grip strength sounds like a gym metric. But researchers and clinicians have increasingly come to see it as something far more significant: a window into the body's overall functional reserve — its capacity to meet the demands of daily life and resist disease.


In a landmark study of nearly 140,000 adults across 17 countries, lower grip strength was associated with a significantly higher risk of death from all causes, including cardiovascular disease. It outperformed blood pressure as a predictor of mortality. That's not a small finding.

Why does squeezing a dynamometer tell us so much? Because grip strength is a proxy. It correlates strongly with lean muscle mass, neuromuscular efficiency, bone density, and the body's ability to recover from illness or surgery. People with low grip strength fall more, fracture more easily, recover more slowly, and are more likely to develop sarcopenia — the age-related loss of muscle that quietly accelerates functional decline.


It's also sensitive to change. Unlike bone density, which shifts slowly over years, grip strength responds to training — and declines noticeably during periods of inactivity, illness, or chronic stress. That makes it both a diagnostic signal and a modifiable target.


What you can do about it:


The good news: grip strength is trainable at any age.

And improving it rarely requires specialized equipment.


Carry heavy things: Farmer's carries, loaded grocery bags, suitcases. Loaded carries build grip and walking mechanics simultaneously.


Dead hangs: Hanging from a bar for 20–60 seconds builds grip endurance and decompresses the spine. Start with 10 seconds.


Compound pulling: Rows, pull-downs, and deadlifts all demand grip. You can't separate hand strength from whole-body strength training.


Get assessed: A movement screen can reveal asymmetries and weaknesses in grip and upper extremity function before they become problems.


Grip strength testing takes about 30 seconds with a handheld dynamometer.

It costs almost nothing. And it gives you a number you can track over time — a direct, objective window into how your body is aging.
